DANIEL 10
A GREAT WARFARE
This prophetic chapter shows the great warfare between the forces of good and evil. A major battle is described showing the intervention of the angel Gabriel, against a Persian king in favour of Greece. This indicates how angels of God are active agents in deciding the outcome of the major battles in human history.
Daniel 10:1
בִּשְׁנַ֣ת שָׁלֹ֗ושׁ לְכֹ֨ורֶשׁ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרַ֔ס
In regnal-year three of Cyrus, king of Persia,
דָּבָר֙ נִגְלָ֣ה לְדָֽנִיֵּ֔אל אֲשֶׁר־נִקְרָ֥א שְׁמֹ֖ו בֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּ֑ר
something was revealed to Daniel,
whose name was called Beltshazzar.
וֶאֱמֶ֤ת הַדָּבָר֙ וְצָבָ֣א גָדֹ֔ול וּבִין֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֔ר
Now that thing is true- namely a great warfare:
and he had close understanding with the matter,
וּבִ֥ינָה לֹ֖ו בַּמַּרְאֶֽה׃
and inner-discernment of the revelation.
Daniel 10:2
בַּיָּמִ֖ים הָהֵ֑ם
Within these days,
אֲנִ֤י דָֽנִיֵּאל֙ הָיִ֣יתִי מִתְאַבֵּ֔ל
I, Daniel, was mourning with regards to myself–
שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה שָׁבֻעִ֖ים יָמִֽים׃
three lots of seven days.
Daniel 10:3
לֶ֣חֶם חֲמֻדֹ֞ות לֹ֣א אָכַ֗לְתִּי
I did not eat pleasant food;
וּבָשָׂ֥ר וָיַ֛יִן לֹא־בָ֥א אֶל־פִּ֖י וְסֹ֣וךְ לֹא־סָ֑כְתִּי
and flesh or wine, it did not go into my mouth,
and I did not anoint myself at all;
עַד־מְלֹ֕את שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת שָׁבֻעִ֖ים יָמִֽים׃ פ
until completing three lots of seven days.
Daniel 10:4
וּבְיֹ֛ום עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָרִאשֹׁ֑ון
Now on day 24 of the first month:
וַאֲנִ֗י הָיִ֛יתִי עַ֣ל יַ֧ד הַנָּהָ֛ר הַגָּדֹ֖ול ה֥וּא חִדָּֽקֶל׃
I was on the bank of the great river, that is the Tigris;
Daniel 10:5
וָאֶשָּׂ֤א אֶת־עֵינַי֙ וָאֵ֔רֶא וְהִנֵּ֥ה אִישׁ־אֶחָ֖ד לָב֣וּשׁ בַּדִּ֑ים
And I lifted up my eyes, and looked,
and behold A Personage, being clothed in white linen,
וּמָתְנָ֥יו חֲגֻרִ֖ים בְּכֶ֥תֶם אוּפָֽז׃
and His mid-region braced with active pure gold;
Daniel 10:6
וּגְוִיָּתֹ֣ו כְתַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ וּפָנָ֞יו כְּמַרְאֵ֤ה בָרָק֙ וְעֵינָיו֙ כְּלַפִּ֣ידֵי אֵ֔שׁ
And His body the like of precious stone,
and His face, like an appearance of lightening,
and His eyes, like lamps of fire,
וּזְרֹֽעֹתָיו֙ וּמַרְגְּלֹתָ֔יו כְּעֵ֖ין נְחֹ֣שֶׁת קָלָ֑ל
and both His arms and the region of His feet,
like a gleaming surface of polished bronze;
וְקֹ֥ול דְּבָרָ֖יו כְּקֹ֥ול הָמֹֽון׃
And the sound of His words, like a voice of a multitude.
Daniel 10:7
וְרָאִיתִי֩ אֲנִ֨י דָנִיֵּ֤אל לְבַדִּי֙ אֶת־הַמַּרְאָ֔ה
Now I Daniel alone could see the revelation,
וְהָאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָי֣וּ עִמִּ֔י לֹ֥א רָא֖וּ אֶת־הַמַּרְאָ֑ה
but the men, those who were with me,
they did not witness this revelation;
אֲבָ֗ל חֲרָדָ֤ה גְדֹלָה֙ נָפְלָ֣ה עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וַֽיִּבְרְח֖וּ בְּהֵחָבֵֽא׃
but instead, great fear fell upon them,
and they ran away, hiding themselves.
Daniel 10:8
וַאֲנִי֙ נִשְׁאַ֣רְתִּי לְבַדִּ֔י
Now I, I alone was left,
וָֽאֶרְאֶ֗ה אֶת־הַמַּרְאָ֤ה הַגְּדֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את וְלֹ֥א נִשְׁאַר־בִּ֖י כֹּ֑ח
and I beheld, this great revelation,
but there did not remain strength in me;
וְהֹודִ֗י נֶהְפַּ֤ךְ עָלַי֙ לְמַשְׁחִ֔ית וְלֹ֥א עָצַ֖רְתִּי כֹּֽחַ׃
and in particular my splendour,
it had changed over me into corruption,
so I did not retain strength.
Daniel 10:9
וָאֶשְׁמַ֖ע אֶת־קֹ֣ול דְּבָרָ֑יו
But I did hear the voice of His words;
וּכְשָׁמְעִי֙ אֶת־קֹ֣ול דְּבָרָ֔יו
and while hearing the voice of His words,
וַאֲנִ֗י הָיִ֛יתִי נִרְדָּ֥ם עַל־פָּנַ֖י וּפָנַ֥י אָֽרְצָה׃
I was entranced upon my face, and my face earthward.
Daniel 10:10
וְהִנֵּה־יָ֖ד נָ֣גְעָה בִּ֑י
Then lo!– a hand, it touched me;
וַתְּנִיעֵ֥נִי עַל־בִּרְכַּ֖י וְכַפֹּ֥ות יָדָֽי׃
and caused me to shake upon my knees
and the palms of my hands;
Daniel 10:11
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֡י דָּנִיֵּ֣אל אִישׁ־חֲ֠מֻדֹות
And he said to me, “Daniel most-precious person,
הָבֵ֨ן בַּדְּבָרִ֜ים אֲשֶׁר֩ אָנֹכִ֨י דֹבֵ֤ר אֵלֶ֨יךָ֙ וַעֲמֹ֣ד עַל־עָמְדֶ֔ךָ
gain insight by the words, those which I speak to you,
and be standing upon your place;
כִּ֥י עַתָּ֖ה שֻׁלַּ֣חְתִּי אֵלֶ֑יךָ
since now I have been sent to you”;
וּבְדַבְּרֹ֥ו עִמִּ֛י אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה עָמַ֥דְתִּי מַרְעִֽיד׃
and while speaking this word beside me, I stood trembling.
Daniel 10:12
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַי֮ אַל־תִּירָ֣א דָנִיֵּאל֒
And he said to me, “Fear not Daniel,
כִּ֣י מִן־הַיֹּ֣ום הָרִאשֹׁ֗ון אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֧תָּ אֶֽת־לִבְּךָ֛
since from the first day, when you had set your heart,
לְהָבִ֧ין וּלְהִתְעַנֹּ֛ות לִפְנֵ֥י אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נִשְׁמְע֣וּ דְבָרֶ֑יךָ
to have understanding and to humble yourself
before your God, your words have been heard;
וַאֲנִי־בָ֖אתִי בִּדְבָרֶֽיךָ׃
Now I came because of your words;
Daniel 10:13
וְשַׂ֣ר ׀ מַלְכ֣וּת פָּרַ֗ס עֹמֵ֤ד לְנֶגְדִּי֙ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים וְאֶחָ֣ד י֔וֹם
And the ruler of the kingdom of Persia
was withstanding me twenty one days,
וְהִנֵּ֣ה מִֽיכָאֵ֗ל אַחַ֛ד הַשָּׂרִ֥ים הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים בָּ֣א לְעָזְרֵ֑נִי
then behold Michael, one of the chief princes (or the first of the chief princes),
came to assist me,
וַאֲנִי֙ נוֹתַ֣רְתִּי שָׁ֔ם אֵ֖צֶל מַלְכֵ֥י פָרָֽס׃
and I was left there, beside the kings of Persia;
Daniel 10:14
וּבָ֨אתִי֙ לַהֲבִ֣ינְךָ֔ אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־יִקְרָ֥ה לְעַמְּךָ֖ בְּאַחֲרִ֣ית הַיָּמִ֑ים
And I have come to cause you to understand,
that which shall occur with reference to your people,
at the end of the days;
כִּי־עֹ֥וד חָזֹ֖ון לַיָּמִֽים׃
That is yet a vision, relating to those days.”
Daniel 10:15
וּבְדַבְּרֹ֣ו עִמִּ֔י כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה
Now during his speaking these words beside me,
נָתַ֧תִּי פָנַ֛י אַ֖רְצָה וְנֶאֱלָֽמְתִּי׃
I had set my face earthward and I was tongue-tied;
Daniel 10:16
וְהִנֵּ֗ה כִּדְמוּת֙ בְּנֵ֣י אָדָ֔ם נֹגֵ֖עַ עַל־שְׂפָתָ֑י
Then behold, the like of the form of the sons of Adam,
touching my lips;
וָאֶפְתַּח־פִּ֗י וָאֲדַבְּרָה֙ וָאֹֽמְרָה֙ אֶל־הָעֹמֵ֣ד לְנֶגְדִּ֔י
And I opened my mouth, and I spoke, and I said,
to the one who stood in front of me:
אֲדֹנִ֗י בַּמַּרְאָה֙ נֶהֶפְכ֤וּ צִירַי֙ עָלַ֔י וְלֹ֥א עָצַ֖רְתִּי כֹּֽחַ׃
“My lord, through the revelation,
my writhings turned themselves upon me,
and I have not retained strength;
Daniel 10:17
וְהֵ֣יךְ יוּכַ֗ל עֶ֤בֶד אֲדֹנִי֙ זֶ֔ה לְדַבֵּ֖ר עִם־אֲדֹ֣נִי זֶ֑ה
Then how will he be able, this servant of my lord,
to speak with this my lord;
וַאֲנִ֤י מֵעַ֨תָּה֙ לֹֽא־יַעֲמָד־בִּ֣י כֹ֔חַ וּנְשָׁמָ֖ה לֹ֥א נִשְׁאֲרָה־בִֽי׃
since I at present cannot stand in my own strength,
and spirit is not left within me?”
Daniel 10:18
וַיֹּ֧סֶף וַיִּגַּע־בִּ֛י כְּמַרְאֵ֥ה אָדָ֖ם וַֽיְחַזְּקֵֽנִי׃
Then He, the like of human appearance,
He strengthened me.
Daniel 10:19
וַיֹּ֜אמֶר אַל־תִּירָ֧א אִישׁ־חֲמֻדֹ֛ות שָׁלֹ֥ום לָ֖ךְ חֲזַ֣ק וַחֲזָ֑ק
And He said, “Do not fear, most precious person–
wellness for you, become strong and be strong.”
וּֽבְדַבְּרֹ֤ו עִמִּי֙ הִתְחַזַּ֔קְתִּי וָאֹ֥מְרָ֛ה יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֲדֹנִ֖י כִּ֥י חִזַּקְתָּֽנִי׃
Then through his speaking with me,
I took courage, and uttered:
“Let my lord speak on, for you have strengthened me.”
Daniel 10:20
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲיָדַ֨עְתָּ֙ לָמָּה־בָּ֣אתִי אֵלֶ֔יךָ
Then he said:
“Have you recognised for what reason I came to you!
וְעַתָּ֣ה אָשׁ֔וּב לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם עִם־שַׂ֣ר פָּרָ֑ס
and now I must return,
to fight with the captain of Persia.
וַאֲנִ֣י יֹוצֵ֔א וְהִנֵּ֥ה שַׂר־יָוָ֖ן בָּֽא׃
Together with my having coming out
— behold the captain of Greece will attack.
Daniel 10:21
אֲבָל֙ אַגִּ֣יד לְךָ֔ אֶת־הָרָשׁ֥וּם בִּכְתָ֖ב אֱמֶ֑ת
Nevertheless, I will declare to you
that which is inscribed within the Register of Truth;
וְאֵ֨ין אֶחָ֜ד מִתְחַזֵּ֤ק עִמִּי֙ עַל־אֵ֔לֶּה
Furthermore there is not one,
holding strongly with me against these,
כִּ֥י אִם־מִיכָאֵ֖ל שַׂרְכֶֽם׃ פ
except Michael, your Captain.”
