DANIEL 1 Interlinear Overview
This chapter describes the looting of the temple treasures of Jerusalem
and the integration of men of royalty and nobility into the society of the eunuch-high-officials of Babylon. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah are put onto a grain-vegetable-bean diet.
Their names are changed to Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego.
They enter the service of Nebuchadnezzar.
Daniel 1:1
In year three (complete calendar years starting from Tishri –
605 BC Judean reckoning or 606 BC by Babylonian reckoning)
of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem
And laid siege to Her;
Daniel 1:2
And the Lord gave into his hand
Jehoiakim king of Judah,
And some of the vessels of the House of the True God,
And he brought them to the land of Shinar,
to the home of his gods;
and he brought the vessels
into the house of the treasure of his gods.
Daniel 1:3
Now the king gave orders to Ashpenaz,
the chief of his eunuch-high-officials,
To integrate some of the sons of Israel,
both from the royal line,
And from the nobles;—
Daniel 1:4
Youth whereon there wasn’t any blemish
and of good appearance,
And insightful in all wisdom,
And having a grip on knowledge
and being discerning of thought,
and who were of integral ability,—
In order to stand in the palace of the king;
And to teach them literature,
and the tongue of the Chaldeans;
Daniel 1:5
And the king assigned to them the menu of the day,
[and the king assigned to them the thing of the day on its day]
from the king’s fine food,
and from the wine for his banquets,
Thus to educate them for three years,
so at the end of them,
they should stand before the king.
Daniel 1:6
Now there was amongst them,
from the sons of Judah,
Daniel (my God is Judge)
Hananyah (the LORD has graciously given);
Mishael (one who is of God),
and Azaryah (helper of the LORD);
Daniel 1:7
Then the leader of the eunuch-high-officials
gave them new names:
And he rendered Daniel →Belteshazzar;
(Akkadian: Balat-Sharri-Utsur/protect the life of the king)
and Hannayah →Shadrach,
and Mishael →Meshach,
and Azaryah →Aved Nego.
Daniel 1:8
But Daniel placed on his heart
that he would not defile himself
with the king’s fine food and with the wine for his banquets;
So he sought from the leader of the eunuch-high-officials that
he might not defile himself.
Daniel 1:9
Now the True God granted Daniel kindness and compassion,
before the leader of the eunuch-high-officials;
Daniel 1:10
But the leader of the eunuch-high-officials said to Daniel:
“I am in fear of my lord the king,
who has allotted your food, and your consumption of drink;
Wherefore, why should he observe your faces looking poorly,
compared to the youths that are around your age group?
And then ye will endanger my head to the king!”
Daniel 1:11
Then Daniel said to the guardian,
whom the leander of the eunuch-high-officials had appointed
over Daniel, Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah:
Daniel 1:12
“Please test thy servants, ten days:
and let them give us from the seed-based produce
and we will eat, and water and we will drink;”
Daniel 1:13
“Then let them be seen before you,—
our countenances and the look of the youths,
those having eaten the king’s fine food;
And then according to that which you shall see,
do with your servants.”
Daniel 1:14
So he hearkened to them concerning this matter,
and he proved them, 10 days.
Daniel 1:15
Now after the end of the ten days
their countenences appeared
better and fatter of flesh,
than all of the youths,
those who were eating the king’s fine food.
Daniel 1:16
Then it took place the guardian, —
having taken away their fine food
and the wine for their banquets,
and giving them vegetable produce.
Daniel 1:17
And these youths, the four of them,
The True God gave them knowledge and insight,
in all literature and wisdom;
And Daniel He made understand about
any vision, and dreams.
Daniel 1:18
Now at the end of the days
that the king had prescribed for their integration,
then the leader of the eunuch-high-officials
brought them all in before Nebuchadnezzar;
Daniel 1:19
And the king spoke with them;
And was not found amongst them all
the likes of Daniel, Hannaniah,
Mishael, and Azariah;
So they took their stand before the king;
Daniel 1:20
Now for any matter, concerning understanding of wisdom,
that which the king had sought from them:
He found them ten strengths
above, in particular, all of the sacred scribes, all of the conjurers,
who were in all his realm;
Daniel 1:21
And Daniel was there,
Until year one of king Cyrus.
