DANIEL 3 Interlinear Overview
Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego refuse to bow down to the golden image, which Nebuchadnezzar the king of the Babylonian empire set up.
They receive the death sentence by incineration.
Nebuchadnezzar gets to witness first-hand the power of the Son of God,
who controls the power of fire.
Daniel 3:1
נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּא עֲבַד צְלֵם דִּֽי־דְהַב
Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold
רוּמֵהּ אַמִּין שִׁתִּין
It’s height: 60 cubits
פְּתָיֵהּ אַמִּין שִׁת
It’s breadth: 6 cubits
אֲקִימֵהּ בְּבִקְעַת דּוּרָא בִּמְדִינַת בָּבֶֽל׃
He set it up on the plain of Dura in the Province of Babylon.
Daniel 3:2
וּנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּא שְׁלַח לְמִכְנַשׁ
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together
לַֽאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּא סִגְנַיָּא וּֽפַחֲוָתָא
the princes, the prefects and the governors
אֲדַרְגָּזְרַיָּא גְדָבְרַיָּא דְּתָבְרַיָּא תִּפְתָּיֵא
the counsellors, the treasurers, the judges, the lawyers
וְכֹל שִׁלְטֹנֵי מְדִֽינָתָא
and so all the officials of the provinces
לְמֵתֵא לַחֲנֻכַּת צַלְמָא דִּי הֲקֵים נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּֽא׃
to come to the dedication of the image
that Nebuchadnezzar the king had erected.
Daniel 3:3
בֵּאדַיִן מִֽתְכַּנְּשִׁין אֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּא סִגְנַיָּא וּֽפַחֲוָתָא
Being gathered together then for the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up,
the princes, the prefects and the governors
אֲדַרְגָּזְרַיָּא גְדָבְרַיָּא דְּתָבְרַיָּא תִּפְתָּיֵא
the counsellors, the treasurers, the judges, the lawyers
וְכֹל שִׁלְטֹנֵי מְדִֽינָתָא
and so all the the officials of the provinces
לַחֲנֻכַּת צַלְמָא דִּי הֲקֵים נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּא
וְקָאֲמִין לָקֳבֵל צַלְמָא דִּי הֲקֵים נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּֽר׃
thereupon are standing in front of the image that
Nebuchadnezzar had erected
Daniel 3:4
וְכָרֹוזָא קָרֵא בְחָיִל
and the herald is proclaiming with might
לְכֹון אָֽמְרִין עַֽמְמַיָּא אֻמַּיָּא וְלִשָּׁנַיָּֽא׃
“They are commanding you, O peoples, nations and languages
Daniel 3:5
בְּעִדָּנָא דִּֽי־תִשְׁמְעוּן קָל קַרְנָא מַשְׁרֹוקִיתָא קִיתָרֹוס
at the time you shall hear the sound of the horn, the pipe, harp,
סַבְּכָא פְּסַנְתֵּרִין סוּמְפֹּנְיָה וְכֹל זְנֵי זְמָרָא
lyre, zither, double flute and all kinds of music,
תִּפְּלוּן וְתִסְגְּדוּן לְצֶלֶם דַּהֲבָא
you shall fall down and shall do homage to the image of gold
דִּי הֲקֵים נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּֽא׃
that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up
Daniel 3:6
וּמַן־דִּי־לָא יִפֵּל וְיִסְגֻּד
And whosoever should not fall down and do homage
בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָא יִתְרְמֵא לְגֹֽוא־אַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּֽא׃
in the same hour will be thrown into the middle of the furnace of the incinerating fire.”
Daniel 3:7
כָּל־קֳבֵל דְּנָה בֵּהּ־זִמְנָא כְּדִי שָֽׁמְעִין כָּֽל־עַמְמַיָּא
on this account at the same time as all the peoples were hearing
קָל קַרְנָא מַשְׁרֹוקִיתָא קִיתָרֹס שַׂבְּכָא פְּסַנְטֵרִין
the sound of the horn, the pipe, harp, lyre, zither
וְכֹל זְנֵי זְמָרָא
and all kinds of music,
נָֽפְלִין כָּֽל־עַֽמְמַיָּא אֻמַיָּא וְלִשָּׁנַיָּא סָֽגְדִין
all the peoples, nations and languages are falling down worshipping
לְצֶלֶם דַּהֲבָא דִּי הֲקֵים נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּֽא׃
the image of gold which Nebuchadnezzar the king had erected.
Daniel 3:8
כָּל־קֳבֵל דְּנָה בֵּהּ־זִמְנָא
On account of this, at that time
קְרִבוּ גֻּבְרִין כַּשְׂדָּאִין
certain Chaldeans approached
וַאֲכַלוּ קַרְצֵיהֹון דִּי יְהוּדָיֵֽא׃
and devoured their Jewish counterparts:
[and devoured pieces of them, of the Jews:]
Daniel 3:9
עֲנֹו וְאָמְרִין לִנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּא
They speak up, saying to Nebuchanezzar the king
מַלְכָּא לְעָלְמִין חֱיִֽי׃
“O King, live forever!
Daniel 3:10
אַנְתָּה מַלְכָּא שָׂמְתָּ טְּעֵם דִּי כָל־אֱנָשׁ
you, O king, made a decree that every person
דִּֽי־יִשְׁמַע קָל קַרְנָא מַשְׁרֹקִיתָא קִיתָרֹס שַׂבְּכָא
that hears the sound of the horn, the pipe, harp, lyre,
פְסַנְתֵּרִין וְסִיפֹּנְיָה
zither and double flute
וְכֹל זְנֵי זְמָרָא יִפֵּל וְיִסְגֻּד לְצֶלֶם דַּהֲבָֽא׃
and all kinds of music must fall down and do homage to the gold image.
Daniel 3:11
וּמַן־דִּי־לָא יִפֵּל וְיִסְגֻּד יִתְרְמֵא לְגֹֽוא־אַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּֽא׃
and whosoever should not fall down and do homage,
he shall be thrown into the middle of the furnace of the incinerating fire.
Daniel 3:12
אִיתַי גֻּבְרִין יְהוּדָאיִן
There are certain Jews,
דִּֽי־מַנִּיתָ יָתְהֹון עַל־עֲבִידַת מְדִינַת בָּבֶל
them that you appointed, over the administration of the Province of Babylon,
שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
Shardrach, Meshach and Aved Nego.
גֻּבְרַיָּא אִלֵּךְ לָא־שָׂמֽוּ עֲלַיִךְ מַלְכָּא טְעֵם
Those individuals: they did not issue the royal decree on your behalf,
לֵאלָהַיִךְ לָא פָלְחִין
are not ministering to your gods,
וּלְצֶלֶם דַּהֲבָא דִּי הֲקֵימְתָּ לָא סָגְדִֽין׃ ס
and so are not doing homage to the image of gold that you have established!”
Daniel 3:13
בֵּאדַיִן נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר בִּרְגַז וַחֲמָה
Thereupon, Nebuchadnezzar with intense anger and fury,
אֲמַר לְהַיְתָיָה לְשַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego.
בֵּאדַיִן גֻּבְרַיָּא אִלֵּךְ הֵיתָיוּ קֳדָם מַלְכָּֽא׃
Then those individuals, they were brought before the king,
Daniel 3:14
עָנֵה נְבֻֽכַדְנֶצַּר וְאָמַר לְהֹון
Nebuchadnezzar responding and saying to them:
הַצְדָּא שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
“Is it a coup stratagem, O Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego?
[is it a malicious design]
לֵֽאלָהַי לָא אִֽיתֵיכֹון פָּֽלְחִין
To my gods, you are not ministering
וּלְצֶלֶם דַּהֲבָא דִּי הֲקֵימֶת לָא סָֽגְדִֽין׃
and to the image of gold which I have set up you are not paying homage?
Daniel 3:15
כְּעַן הֵן אִֽיתֵיכֹון עֲתִידִין
Now either you are ready,
דִּי בְעִדָּנָא דִּֽי־תִשְׁמְעוּן
so that at the time when ye will hear
קָל קַרְנָא מַשְׁרֹוקִיתָא קִיתָרֹס שַׂבְּכָא
the sound of the horn, the pipe, harp, lyre,
פְּסַנְתֵּרִין וְסוּמְפֹּנְיָה וְכֹל זְנֵי זְמָרָא
zither and double flute and all kinds of music
תִּפְּלוּן וְתִסְגְּדוּן לְצַלְמָא דִֽי־עַבְדֵת
ye shall fall down and do homage to the image of gold that I made;
וְהֵן לָא תִסְגְּדוּן בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָה
Or if ye shall not do homage, in this very hour
תִתְרְמֹון לְגֹֽוא־אַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּא
shall ye be cast into the midst of the furnace of the incinerating fire!
וּמַן־הוּא אֱלָהּ דֵּי יְשֵֽׁיזְבִנְכֹון מִן־יְדָֽי׃
And who is that god who can deliver you out of my hands!?”
Daniel 3:16
עֲנֹו שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו וְאָמְרִין לְמַלְכָּא
Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego speak up
and are saying to the king:
נְבֽוּכַדְנֶצַּר לָֽא־חַשְׁחִין אֲנַחְנָה
“ O Nebuchadnezzar , we were not reckoning needful
עַל־דְּנָה פִּתְגָם לַהֲתָבוּתָֽךְ׃
concerning this, to give you word back:
DANIEL 3:17
הֵן אִיתַי אֱלָהַנָא
If it be so, our God,
דִּֽי־אֲנַחְנָא פָֽלְחִין יָכִל לְשֵׁיזָבוּתַנָא
Whom we are serving, is able to deliver us
מִן־אַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּא
from the furnace of incinerating fire
וּמִן־יְדָךְ מַלְכָּא יְשֵׁיזִֽב׃
and from your power, O king, he can save us
DANIEL 3:18
וְהֵן לָא יְדִיעַ לֶהֱוֵא־לָךְ מַלְכָּא
But if not, let it be known to you, O king
דִּי לֵֽאלָהָיִךְ לָא־אִיתַיְנָא פָֽלְחִין
that your gods we are not serving
וּלְצֶלֶם דַּהֲבָא דִּי הֲקֵימְתָּ לָא נִסְגֻּֽד׃ ס
and we cannot do homage to the image of gold that you set up”.
Daniel 3:19
בֵּאדַיִן נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר הִתְמְלִי חֱמָא
Thereupon Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury
וּצְלֵם אַנְפֹּוהִי אֶשְׁתַּנּוּ
and the expression of his face became different
עַל־שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
towards Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego,
עָנֵה וְאָמַר לְמֵזֵא לְאַתּוּנָא
responding and commanding to heat the furnace
חַד־שִׁבְעָה עַל דִּי חֲזֵה לְמֵזְיֵֽהּ׃
seven times over that which had been witnessed for its heating
Daniel 3:20
וּלְגֻבְרִין גִּבָּֽרֵי־חַיִל דִּי בְחַיְלֵהּ
And certain mighty ones of power who were in his army
אֲמַר לְכַפָּתָה לְשַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
he commanded to bind Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego
לְמִרְמֵא לְאַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּֽא׃
for throwing into the furnace of the incinerating fire
Daniel 3:21
בֵּאדַיִן גֻּבְרַיָּא אִלֵּךְ כְּפִתוּ בְּסַרְבָּלֵיהֹון
immediately these men were bound in their trousers
פַּטִּישֵׁיהֹון וְכַרְבְּלָתְהֹון וּלְבֻשֵׁיהֹון
their shirts, their turbans and so their clothing
וּרְמִיו לְגֹֽוא־אַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּֽא׃
and were being thrown into the middle of the furnace of the incinerating fire.
Daniel 3:22
כָּל־קֳבֵל דְּנָה מִן־דִּי מִלַּת מַלְכָּא מַחְצְפָה
Due to this, since the word of the king had severity
וְאַתּוּנָא אֵזֵה יַתִּירָא
and the furnace being excessively hot,
גֻּבְרַיָּא אִלֵּךְ דִּי הַסִּקוּ לְשַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
these men who lifted up Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego,
קַטִּל הִמֹּון שְׁבִיבָא דִּי נוּרָֽא׃
the blaze of the fire slew them.
Daniel 3:23
וְגֻבְרַיָּא אִלֵּךְ תְּלָתֵּהֹון שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
then those men, the three of them, Shadrach, Meshach and Aved Nego,
נְפַלוּ לְגֹֽוא־אַתּוּן־נוּרָא יָֽקִדְתָּא מְכַפְּתִֽין׃ פ
fell down bound in the midst of the furnace of the incinerating fire.
Daniel 3:24
אֱדַיִן נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּא תְּוַהּ
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was startled,
וְקָם בְּהִתְבְּהָלָה עָנֵה וְאָמַר לְהַדָּֽבְרֹוהִי
and he rose in haste speaking and saying to his ministers:
הֲלָא גֻבְרִין תְּלָתָא רְמֵינָא לְגֹוא־נוּרָא מְכַפְּתִין
“Did we not throw the three men bound into the midst of the fire?”
עָנַיִן וְאָמְרִין לְמַלְכָּא יַצִּיבָא מַלְכָּֽא׃
The ministers, responding and saying to the king, “Certainly, O king.”
Daniel 3:25
עָנֵה וְאָמַר הָֽא־אֲנָה חָזֵה גֻּבְרִין אַרְבְּעָה שְׁרַיִן
Nebuchadnezzar replying and saying: “ Lo! I am witnessing four men, freed,
מַהְלְכִין בְּגֹֽוא־נוּרָא וַחֲבָל לָא־אִיתַי בְּהֹון
walking in the midst of the fire, and there isn’t injury on them.
וְרֵוֵהּ דִּי רְבִיעָיָא דָּמֵה לְבַר־אֱלָהִֽין׃ ס
Moreover His appearance, that of the fourth, is resembling the Son of God!”
Daniel 3:26
בֵּאדַיִן קְרֵב נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר
Nebuchadnezzar then approached
לִתְרַע אַתּוּן נוּרָא יָקִֽדְתָּא עָנֵה וְאָמַר
the door of the furnace of the incinerating fire speaking up and saying
שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד־נְגֹו עַבְדֹוהִי דִּֽי־אֱלָהָא עִלָּיָא
“Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego, His servants of the Most High God
פֻּקוּ וֶאֱתֹו
exit and come!”.
בֵּאדַיִן נָֽפְקִין שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
Thereupon Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego are exiting
מִן־גֹּוא נוּרָֽא׃
from the middle of the fire
Daniel 3:27
וּמִֽתְכַּנְּשִׁין
and having been gathered together,
אֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּא סִגְנַיָּא וּפַחֲוָתָא וְהַדָּבְרֵי מַלְכָּא
the princes, prefects, governors and the king’s ministers
חָזַיִן לְגֻבְרַיָּא אִלֵּךְ דִּי לָֽא־שְׁלֵט נוּרָא בְּגֶשְׁמְהֹון
are witnessing those men whom the fire had not power on their bodies
וּשְׂעַר רֵֽאשְׁהֹון לָא הִתְחָרַךְ
and the hair of their heads was not singed,
וְסָרְבָּלֵיהֹון לָא שְׁנֹו וְרֵיחַ נוּר לָא עֲדָת בְּהֹֽון׃
moreover their mantles were not different, indeed fire odour had not transferred on them!
Daniel 3:28
עָנֵה נְבֽוּכַדְנֶצַּר וְאָמַר
Nebuchadnezzar speaking up and saying
בְּרִיךְ אֱלָהֲהֹון דִּֽי־שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
“Blessed is their God, of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego
דִּֽי־שְׁלַח מַלְאֲכֵהּ וְשֵׁיזִב לְעַבְדֹוהִי
Who sent His Messenger, and delivered His servants
דִּי הִתְרְחִצוּ עֲלֹוהִי
that set their trust on Him;
וּמִלַּת מַלְכָּא שַׁנִּיו וִיהַבוּ גֶשְׁמֵיהֹון
and they have changed the word of the king and have surrendered their bodies
דִּי לָֽא־יִפְלְחוּן וְלָֽא־יִסְגְּדוּן לְכָל־אֱלָהּ לָהֵן לֵאלָֽהֲהֹֽון׃
so that they should not reverence and not do homage to any god except their God
Daniel 3:29
וּמִנִּי שִׂים טְעֵם דִּי כָל־עַם אֻמָּה וְלִשָּׁן
and so from me a decree is issued that any people, nation or language
דִּֽי־יֵאמַר שֵׁלָה עַל אֱלָהֲהֹון
that should declare insolence against their God,
דִּֽי־שַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹוא
of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed Nego,
הַדָּמִין יִתְעֲבֵד וּבַיְתֵהּ נְוָלִי יִשְׁתַּוֵּה
will be dismembered and their house rendered a refuse pile
כָּל־קֳבֵל דִּי לָא אִיתַי אֱלָה אָחֳרָן
because there is not another God
דִּֽי־יִכֻּל לְהַצָּלָה כִּדְנָֽה׃
who will be able to rescue like this!”
Daniel 3:30
בֵּאדַיִן מַלְכָּא הַצְלַח לְשַׁדְרַךְ מֵישַׁךְ וַעֲבֵד נְגֹו
The king then promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego
בִּמְדִינַת בָּבֶֽל׃ פ
in the Province of Babylon.
